The new QR codes have become a powerful tool in marketing. I have designed a business card using my QR Code (see below) that I hand out in networking events to get more users to this blog for example. By using apps such as QR Droid you can simply scan the QR code and it takes your always on mobile device somewhere. Now traditionally static advertising media becomes interactive. Very powerful stuff!
What is it?
QR, short for quick response, is a square-shaped two-dimensional(2D) barcode that can be read with most any smartphone camera and interpreted through its scanning software. Once scanned the end user is presented with the option of being directed to a web based offering(s) and/or places. Simple and fast are what makes this technology so powerful and absolutely the next big thing for business owners!
More information and more reliable.
QR codes are popping up in media venues like magazines, advertisements, billboards, and product labels. Unlike traditional one-dimensional(1D) barcodes, QR codes can contain more usable information, in a more reliable format.
2D barcodes, like QR, store information both vertically and horizontally in a repeating format. This not only allows for more data to be stored, but repeating information throughout the code ensures that if a code is scuffed or damaged, the message can still be read.
Already in use.
Most likely you’ve already seen a QR code, as they are commonly placed on statements, bills, and other bulk mail pieces. Now that you’re aware of them you’ll see them all over. So why the implementation?
“Get it now” technology.
Instant gratification is one of the principle reasons QR code campaigns are successful. These campaigns can have higher engagement rates as compared to normal direct-mail response rates. Why? If a customer sees a special offer, they no longer have to wait to mail in a rebate or go home and visit a website. They want it now… and that’s what using QR codes is all about.
Easily change offering.
Another great advantage to using QR codes, from a business viewpoint, is the content can easily change. If you want to offer a discount for a short period of time you can do it. Online offerings through a QR code can be updated or changed to reflect a current marketing or promotional campaign instantaneously and inexpensively. Now that’s online marketing power!
Business use for QR Code.
Traditional business uses for QR codes:
- Email Signature
- Limited time offering
- Videos about how to use your product
- Celebrity endorsement
- Promotional venue for product samples and give-aways
- Where your product can be purchased
- Call-to-action
“Out of the box” business uses of QR codes:
Quick advice.
Remember the content will be viewed on a smartphone, so it must be optimized for this format. Once you have the code and content prepared make sure it works and formats correctly.
This is new technology to most… Spell out how to scan the QR code, and help instruct customers on where they can grab scanner apps.
